The Ruger American rifle is an excellent, value for money rifle. I bought it as a package with a good quality Vortex scope and have been very pleased with it on the handful of times I have used it. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the plastic magazine, which is a heap of junk. I didn't know the rifle had a plastic magazine until I picked it up, and had never come across one before. The one that came with the rifle literally fell apart in my hands when I was pre-cleaning prior to a hunt. I got online to see if my experience was unique, only to discover many reviews by owners who have had exactly the same problem. I have now ordered two replacement magazines as I have no confidence I will not experience another failure with this crappy magazine. If you think of the internal pressures the rifle is subjected to when a bullet is fired, it stands to reason that a plastic magazine is going to be a weak link in the chain. What Ruger were thinking when they went this way, I don't know.
